We are all made of stars

Wednesday, June 30th, 2010

If you aren’t aware, the Griffith Observatory, in Los Angeles, holds a “Star Party” on the third Saturday of every month. Fortunately for us the “stars” at this Hollywood party aren’t some depressingly self-centered celebrity. For more info on this monthly event, be sure to hit the observatory’s star party page. Photos are from the most recent party on June 19th. More photos on Flickr.

Summer’s Eve

Monday, June 21st, 2010

I want to give a special shout to the very lovely and talented Natalia Brutalia.  I ended an awesome birthday weekend with her and Billy Roper.  We spent some time at the pool and then made a visit to the Do Over in Hollywood.  Natalia runs the spanking new MEOW blog over on TheHundreds.com. There are some great photos from Sunday, including a awesome picture of yours truly. Be sure to bookmark her blog because there will be some definite treats to come.

Lakers WIN!! Los Angeles loses.

Friday, June 18th, 2010

Congratulations to the Los Angeles Lakers, the 2010 NBA champions!!! I was fortunate enough to be downtown to witness the aftermath of game 7 and got to snap a few shots on my point and shoot. Additional photos are available on our flickr. Check out those rubber bullets in the photo below. I was shot in the back and in the arm while taking photos and my friend Nick was shot point blank in the leg. I understand the need for the riot police though as I witnessed a few unruly fans break a large window and send a dumpster into oncoming traffic. It is unfortunate that after such a great moment in Lakers history we as a city cant even celebrate without destroying our own city.

Enjoy the photos.

WHO THE FUCK LET THE NINJAS IN?

Last week was a week to remember thanks to a visit from Ninjasonik. Fresh off the release of their new album, Art School Girls, the boys came through to put on a couple shows out here in Los Angeles.

Luchadors, burlesque dancers and comedy. Since 2002, that is what Lucha VaVoom has been bringing to the table. We were lucky enough to attend the sold-out 2nd Annual Cinco de Mayan to witness this fantastic display of sexo y violencia. The wrestling is extremely entertaining and the hosts add good comedic commentary. It actually reminds me a bit of that SpikeTV show, MXC. As far as the burlesque part of the show, the fact that all the dance routines have a high possibility of turning into a striptease, gives me a warm feeling inside. The show returns to The Mayan theater in June so be sure to check out their site for ticket info. A special thank you to Angie for the invite, it was an awesome way to celebrate Cinco de Mayo!

We rolled out to Venice on Saturday night for the Rogue Status x SYRV benefit art show. Saw some nice stuff inside and outside of the store. Check out the photos on thebadcharacter flickr.

Thanks to our friends at Rogue Status for taking care of us, as always it was quite a party.

House @ Eames

Monday, March 22nd, 2010

I got a chance to check out the House Industries gallery exhibition at Eames office in Santa Monica. They were debuting the Eames typeface and had some three dimensional examples cut from Eames signature molded plywood. If you dont know about Eames you can check out their site. I was given the full history by a nice woman named Roz at Eames office.

Also on hand was Fresh Pressed doing live screen printing of the new typeface while The Mattson 2 kept things jazzy.

Wholetrain

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010

On Monday night at the GOETHE INSTITUTE, Jimmy and I were lucky enough to attend the west coast premiere of Florian Gaag’s film WHOLETRAIN:

I have seen my share of “graffiti” related movies and they all tend to lack a certain realness.  Most movies of that genre emphasize aspects of the culture that really don’t speak to real writers/bombers.  Either they overload the main characters with hip hop super powers or they portray the act of graffiti in a unrealistic manner. WHOLETRAIN is as real as it gets yet still maintains a captivating story line.

After watching the film there was a short Q&A with writer and director Florian Gaag. We were able to talk briefly with him about what was next for the film and he assured us there would be a coming DVD release and possibly a larger premiere in the near future. He also mentioned possibly bringing the world famous MACLAIM crew to Los Angeles to collaborate with local artists in support of a larger west coast release.

We will be looking forward to seeing new things from Florian Gaag in the future or at least getting our hands on a DVD copy of Wholetrain.

Opening Night – First Fridays At Los Angeles Natural History Museum

Wednesday, January 13th, 2010

Who would’ve thought that the coolest place to party on a Friday Night is in a museum? All “Night at the Museum” jokes aside, the Los Angeles Natural History Museum throws some of the coolest events every first Friday for the first six months out of the year. It’s truly a sight and scene to be experienced; dancing and drinking in the middle of a museum, while DJ lights bounce off dinosaur bones. These events are all ages running from 5:30pm – 10:00pm. They have dinner concessions and for the 21+ crowd, 3 bars. For music, two live bands usually perform in one hall, while DJs spin in another hall all night.
