Art Walk DTLA

Tuesday, October 6th, 2009

We cruised down to art-walk the other day to check out a few different shows that were going on downtown. First we stopped at ROWAN to see paintings and photography from TANK BREK and ZES. ZESER’s photos were amazing, offering a candid view of Los Angeles most people never get to see. From there we made our way over to LAST LAUGH where PATRICK MARTINEZ was having an opening for his show “You don’t have to lie to kick it”. The paintings were incredible as usual and he had a few neon signs that were comedy. I posted the rest of the pics on the TBC FLICKR. Here are a few i picked out:

Stay Classy, San Diego!

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

Sometimes I really miss living in San Diego.  The atmosphere in SD is so different from LA, even though they are only separated by a little over a 100 miles.  I don’t mean the physical atmosphere either, though that is different also, and by different I mean better air quality.  What I’m talking about it, is the care-free spirit that seems to embody most individuals in San Diego.  I guess that was also one of the reasons I disliked it so much too.  Go figure.

The purpose of our trip was to visit Overload skate shop in North Park, SD to represent The Wild Ones.  If you don’t know, Overload has been doing a lot of great things for the skate community down in SD.  Just check their blog.  They held an event on the 11th featuring DJ Bella Loki, live in-store painting and drinks.  The Famous skate team rolled by since they were in the area for ASR, as did our good friends from 9five eyewear.

Greg hooked up a sick dripping monogram logo for The Wild Ones, along with writing Overload & The Wild Ones above vinyl cut-outs of the bandit figure.  Overall the event was really awesome, and it was great to meet the fans of the brand and hanging out with the Overload Skateshop family.  If you’re in the North Park area of San Diego, stop by the Overload shop and tell’em thebadcharacter sent ya!

do you believe in MAGIC?

Friday, September 4th, 2009

Just got back from Vegas, Jimmy and I were out there for 5 days reppin THE WILD ONES. It was definitely one of the best shows i have been to. Famous Stars and Straps & Tribal Gear had an insane spot set up complete with DJ booth (Alchemist spun a dope set on tuesday!), Heineken kegs, the Jaro sisters and this amazing art wall that was hooked up by OG ABEL, MAXX242 and, DIRE ONE. All of this was over shadowed by the passing of DJ AM who was scheduled to perform tuesday night with Mix Master Mike and DJ Jazzy Jeff at the FSAS/TRIBAL party @ RAIN night club. The party was a great chance to remember DJ AM with Mix Master Mike opening with an incredible set that had the crowd in a frenzy. Up next was DJ Jazzy Jeff and surprise guest DJ Premier who rocked together the rest of the night on 4 turntables! Overall the trip was fun and I hear TWO did very well. Thanks to everyone that showed love and stopped by the booth. We will see everyone next year…

Sea No Evil

Monday, August 31st, 2009

Before heading out to Vegas for MAGIC, we stopped by the annual Sea No Evil art show held at the Riverside Municipal Auditorium. Over 60 art pieces were donated from such notable artists as Jeff Soto, Shepard Fairey, RETNA, Greg “Craola” Simkins, Jon Chase, and Maxx242.  It’s always great to see the work of great artists, especially when you know them personally and have seen their work evolve.  They held a silent auction for these pieces, with all proceeds benefiting the Sea Shepard Conservation Society.  Captain Paul Watson, founder of Sea Shepherd Conservation Society and focus of the Animal Planet’s popular series “Whale Wars” was the featured speaker giving an update on the state of affairs in the Oceans of the world.  Shepard Fairey spun a set as the featured DJ of the night.  Overall it was a great turn out and lots of fun.  Can’t wait for next year.

Sunset Junction

Our usual Sunday ritual of happy hour sushi on Sunset Blvd collided with the Annual Sunset Junction Street Festival.  Luckily for us we were able to sidestep the required $20 entry fee since our sushi spot was about 20 feet inside the entrance.  I, for one, love events like this.  With musical acts such as Morris Day and the Times & Arrested Development, how could this not be for the win?  Actually, there were a few bands/ DJs that are worth mentioning such as Jason Bentley, Built To Spill.. and.. well actually that’s all I can think of.  Perhaps there were some other bands and DJs that were cool, if you think so, feel free to send me a download link. I’m always more than willing to give it a listen.
